The use of robots by police and other security agencies for very complex and difficult situations will be rampant in the future, said a tech security expert.
In an interview with Khaleej Times on the sidelines of the Ministry of Interior (MoI) Innovation and Police Technology Summit, which kicked off in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, Derek Woodgate, president and chief futurist at The Futures Lab, USA, said the world shall see the police using more and more robots, especially where the terrains are difficult and when they are going into hazardous or complex situations.
"More robots will be used in dangerous situations instead of humans. Cyborgs or enhanced humans having mechanical elements are already being used in certain situations," he said.
"We shall also see massive use of sensors linked to artificial intelligence (AI), fully connected Internet of things (IoT) type systems where everything is alive or a living matter. The ability for us to see material things having a life or a brain is very difficult. But the reality is, that is how we have to see it. It's all part of our living environment," he said.
"We are going to see materials which withstand very rigorous circumstances and are able to take a bullet and adjust within shape shifting. We shall see nano robots like insects doing invisible jobs. AI can make it possible to predict high-risk criminals or safety concerns in real-time."
The two-day summit gathered senior government representatives and decision makers from the UAE Police Forces, Ports and Border Control, Central Command, intelligence agencies, cyber security departments, Smart City departments, as well as other entities that are responsible for information, technology, strategy and driving the UAE innovation and future foresight development.
