As part of developing road infrastructure in the emirate, the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has announced the partial closure of Sheikh Majid Bin Saqr Al Qassimi roundabout from Sunday. Alternative routes are in place until the area will reopen with a traffic intersection.
Yousef Saleh Al Suwaiji, chairman of the commission, said the project is one of the integrated solutions that the RTA relies on to reduce congestion problems and achieve its vision in providing safe and smooth traffic. "In the first stage of roundabout development plans, Sheikh Majid bin Saqr Al Qassimi and Sheikh Muhammad bin Sultan Al Qassimi roundabouts will be turned into traffic intersections at a cost of Dh103 million," he said.
The project is being executed under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. "He gives great importance to infrastructure because of its role in enhancing the emirate's economic, investment and tourism position both locally and globally," said Al Suwaiji.
Fatima Al Ketbi, director of roads projects department at the RTA, said the development works include re-establishing the roundabout areas and the roads leading to it from all four directions - by 800 metres from Sheikh Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qassimi Street and 700 metres from Al Mirqab Street. "The roads at the intersection area will also become three lanes, in addition to two lanes added in the left direction to facilitate U-turn," she said.
"The RTA give priority the development works in Sheikh Majid Bin Saqr Al Qassimi Square because it mediates four residential areas -Azra, Ghafia, Al Falaj, and Al Jazzat. It also links these areas to the school district and other exits leading to several vital areas in the city," she added.
"The works include removal of the roundabouts and construction of the roads by 1.1km for Sheikh Muhammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi Street - which mediates the areas of Al Nakhilat, Al Mirqab, Al Qadisiyah and Sharqan - and 1.8km to Sheikh Majid Bin Saqr Al Qasimi Street," said Al Ketbi.
