The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) issued 70 fines against buildings, houses and villas for violating safety norms. Fines have been issued for violations such as not using capacitor banks (used to reduce energy consumption) and for storing discarded materials in the metre rooms of buildings.
Sewa conducted inspections in various areas of the emirate to see if people are following the set rules regarding using the capacitor banks and keeping the power metre rooms clean.
According to Dr Rashid Alleem, Chairman of the authority, capacitor banks must be used to for power factor correction and reactive power compensation.
They are fitted in all metre and powers rooms of all building, houses and villas, but people don't use them and this is a violation of the law.
He explained that the storing of discarded material in power metre rooms is dangerous as storing material in such an improper way can cause fire in the meter room and is against the safety and fire protection rules.
Sewa is also currently working to achieve the goal of Sharjah city of power conservation in the world. Alleem said Sewa launched the awareness campaign to make people aware about ways to reduce power consumption.
