The department of public works and services in Ras Al Khaimah has started replacing traditional street lights with power-saving LEDs on most of the major roads in the emirate.
These include Al Shohada road, as well as the airport road, Al Dahisa road, Shaikh Mohammed bin Salem road, Shaikh Rashid bin Salim road, and all the public parks of the emirate, according to a senior official.
"Most of the roads in the emirate are now being lit by these power-saving and environment friendly LEDs," said Ahmed Al Hammadi, director-general of the department. According to Al Hammadi, a comparison among all type of lights, spanning sodium, induction, LED, and many others available in the market was conducted.
"LED lights are more efficient, consume less power, has a longer life and is more durable and environment friendly."
He added that while the light gets distributed in several directions in traditional lamps, LED lamps are dark sky compliant, which means they direct light onto the ground and reduce light pollution.
"The result is a much brighter, whiter light concentrated on the sidewalks and road space, improving visibility. The associated adaptive technology also offers real-time monitoring."
