All categories of buses, including school buses, have been banned inside Dubai's airport tunnel. The only exceptions are Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) buses and 14-seater light buses.
The rule was made effective from Sunday.
Maitha bin Udai, CEO of the RTA's traffic and roads agency, said the decision was made based on studies to address issues such as congestion along the roads leading to the tunnel, and the poor air quality inside.
"We've made this decision looking at the potential implications of any major accidents inside the tunnel due to its proximity to the airport, as well being right under the airport runway," said bin Udai.
Alternate routes such as Itihad Road, Shaikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, Algeria Road and Academic City Road can be used by buses.
