Motorists travelling from Umm Al Quwain to Ras Al Khaimah and vice versa will have a new route by the beginning of April.
The Emirates Road, previously known as the Bypass Road, will be extended from the Aqran area in Umm Al Quwain to the Martyrs area in Ras Al Khaimah, according to a senior official.
Eng Abdulrahman Al Mahmoud, head of Execution Division of the Roads Department with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, said the 16km-long two-direction road extension would cost around Dh142 million.
"The new road consists of four lanes - two in each direction, with the capacity to add a third lane in both directions in the future. It is slated to be completed in the beginning of next April. The new road is a valuable addition to the federal road network that connects the northern and southern regions of the UAE," he said.
The road, extending along the Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road from the east in the direction of Ras Al Khaimah, will boost traffic flow in the northern emirate, he stated.
"The new road will help the heavy truck traffic move from the Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and connect it with the Ras Al Khaimah Ring Road in the future."
Eng Al Mahmoud said the ministry has also built some rest areas for heavy trucks on both sides of the road and drainages for rain water.
The new road will save time for drivers travelling from Dubai and Sharjah, he pointed out. "Drivers now need not to pass by the Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road in the Aqran area," he said, noting that the ministry adopts latest and best international practices in road projects to boost sustainable development in the country.
