A Sudanese woman died while trying to save her 11-month-old child who fell from a building in Ajman on Sunday morning. According to eyewitnesses, it looked like the woman was trying to protect her son, who slipped off the window of their fifth floor apartment.
The mother died on the spot, a top Ajman Police official confirmed to Khaleej Times. The incident was reported from Al Jazeera building in Al Nuaimia area. According to Major Ali Jaber, director of Ajman police stations, police patrols and paramedics rushed to the spot after getting information about the incident, and found the mother dead. The boy, who suffered serious injuries, is admitted to the ICU of the Khalifa Hospital.
The police contacted the woman's husband -manager of a company in Dubai- who said he had gone to the immigration department to take a residency visa for his wife and son, who were here on a visit visa. He also said the woman had been getting treatment for depression.
The building's watchman told the police that he saw the woman's husband as he left the building around 8am. Around 11.30am, he heard screams from behind the building. On rushing there, he saw the woman, in her early 20s, lying in a pool of blood on top of her child. He saw the boy clutched tightly in her arms and immediately called the police. The mother and son fell from their bedroom window, which had no safety panes.
According to the neighbours, the family had moved into room number 505 just a month ago. A neighbour said the deceased was very quiet and had not made many friends in the building.
A Sudanese neighbour said: "I was coming back from work when I saw the crowd. The police had cordoned off the area. An eyewitness from the building opposite ours said that the child fell and he saw the mother jumping after him to catch him. The police have questioned the neighbours to understand if there were any problems between the couple.
