A significant rise of 8.7 million has been seen in the number of people depending on public transportation system in Dubai since 2014, according to statistics from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai.
The figures say the use of mass transit - Dubai Metro, buses, taxis and marine transports - in the emirate has hit 271.3million in the first half of the year. Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the board of executive directors of the RTA said that public transport ridership was at 262.57 million during this period last year. He noted that the RTA is attempting to raise the share of public transport means to 30 per cent by 2030.
Dubai Metro and tram
The number of metro riders on both the Red and Green Lines in the last six months stood at 88.3 million compared to 81.4 million during the same period last year.
Separately, 55.78 million used the Red Line compared to last year's 51.8 million, while ridership of the Green Line was recorded 29.6 million and 32.47 respectively. More than 1.5 million used the Dubai Tram during the first half of this year.
Public buses
More than 66.5million used the public buses during this period.
Among them, 44.1million depended on the Dubai Bus service, followed by the feeder bus service at Metro stations with 13.4million, and the Intercity Bus Service with 5.96 million users.
Dubai Taxi
Taxis operating in Dubai (Dubai Taxi and franchise taxi companies) have made 53.57million trips lifting 107.51 passengers. The Dubai Taxi Corporation got more passengers with 23.1million trips serving about 46.34million passengers.
Marine transport
The marine transit modes, comprising abras, water bus, water taxi and Dubai ferry, were used by 7.49 million. The water bus carried 249,911, while Dubai Ferry and Water Taxi offered services to 56,568 and 14,541 respectively.
