A man who used the mobile phone of his colleague to send insulting and abusive text messages to their female workmate has been fined Dh50,000.
The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance handed down the sentence to the Asian man after he was found guilty of impersonation and using a phone to send insulting messages to the woman, which violates the law.
Court documents stated that the Asian man took his workmate's phone and used it to send abusive messages to a female worker at their company.
The woman complained to authorities after receiving the messages and the man was prosecuted after investigations confirmed his involvement.
The charge was, however, dropped from the man after further investigations revealed that his colleague is the one who had used his phone to send the abusive messages to the woman and that too without his knowledge.
The Asian had admitted to sending the text messages to the woman during interrogations at the public prosecution.
And Khadija Al Marzouki, the lawyer representing the woman, said her client was undermined and psychologically tortured by the abusive and insulting messages sent to her by the defendant.
She said she would be filing a civil case against the defendant demanding compensation for the damages.
