A man, who allegedly posed as a CID officer to get a Bangladeshi worker inside his car, stood trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday.
Shortly after the complainant rode in the defendant's car, the latter reportedly robbed him of Dh3,000 and two mobile phones, according to prosecution records.
The defendant was charged with robbery and impersonation of a police officer for the incident that took place on August 19. A case was registered at Bur Dubai police station.
"The worker claimed that he was walking near his accommodation to a supermarket at 10pm when the defendant suddenly grabbed him and took him inside his car. He took Dh3,000 from his wallet and his two mobile phones. He gave him back his ID then sped off," said a police sergeant who responded to the robbery report in Al Quoz industrial area.
The police managed to locate the defendant through the plate number of the car he was driving.
"It belonged to his sister but he was driving it. We arrested him outside his house in Al Muhaisnah," the sergeant told the prosecutor.
According to the officer, "three mobile phones and a large quantity of mobile recharge cards" were found in the defendant's possession, and it couldn't be ascertained yet whether his sister knew that her car was being used in robberies.
During the public prosecution investigation, the defendant - who has a criminal record - admitted that he took the complainant's phones and recharge cards.
The trial has been adjourned to November 10.
