A housemaid, who ran her flat as a gambling den in Dubai, has been sentenced to three months in jail. The 46-year-old Filipina maid earlier denied the charge at the Court of First Instance.
The court ordered her to pay Dh100,000 fine and that she be deported after completing her jail term.
According to the public prosecution records, the maid used to collect Dh100 per day from other accomplices, already convicted, so they could gamble at her place in Al Satwa.
The police raided the flat on May 12, 2017, and the case was registered at Bur Dubai police station.
She admitted during investigation she sublet the flat to other suspects (already convicted in this case) to gamble there for Dh100 a day.
A policeman, who was a member of the task force that made the raid and arrests, said: "We had a reliable source tipping us off that a Filipina woman was using her flat in suspicious illegal activities that is gamble.
"After obtaining a public prosecution warrant, we raided the flat and arrested five persons, including women, and they had been convicted in connection with this case."
According to the policeman's testimony, the five accomplices admitted they sublet the flat from the maid for gambling purposes and she was aware of that and allowed it. They would pay her Dh100 a day. One of them claimed it was the maid who was running the business.
Cash money and other tools used in gambling were seized from the place.
The maid had admitted the charges during the public prosecution investigation. The defendant can appeal the verdict within 15 days.
