A 28-year-old man, who was convicted of growing marijuana in his home for trafficking it, has had his death sentence commuted to life in jail. The Abu Dhabi Appeal Court upheld a ruling by the lower court that found the Asian man guilty of illegally growing marijuana plants and peddling drugs.
The Abu Dhabi Police had caught the man in February this year when he attempted to sell nearly half a kilogramme of the drug he grew at home. The police also seized more than 600 grammes of the drug and seeds from the man's home in Abu Dhabi.
According to the police, the Asian man was growing the plants in temperature-controlled rooms with special lighting. The man admitted to growing the marijuana plants but denied peddling drugs.
He said he was growing the marijuana for personal use.
