The Sharjah Police have instructed all jewellery outlets and commercial money exchanges to equip their premises with cameras and early detection alarm systems linked directly with the operations room in order to prevent thefts.
Theft: Duo tries to steal Dh1,790 worth of clothes from shop
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Brigadier Saif Al Zeri, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police said only 88 per cent of 719 establishments have committed to link their premises to the operations room. Those who fail to connect will now face hefty fines as per the rules set by the Sharjah Executive Council.

The rule since it was implemented in 2015 has contributed towards reducing the number of thefts at exchanges and jewellery shops in the emirate, he said. The system also helped the police foil a number of robberies targeting such outlets, he added, citing the robbery at a gold showroom in Rolla, Sharjah, in which thieves made off with over Dh1.3 million worth of jewellery.

The alarm connected to operations room set off as the culprits broke in through the front door. The police rushed to the spot to collect evidence and lift fingerprints and alerted the management of the shop about the robbery. The police also restored the jewellery.

"This is the second major robbery at a Sharjah jewellery shop in the last two years in which cameras and early detection alarms have alerted the police," he said.
The police have started installing 500 cameras in commercial areas of the city. These advanced cameras are linked to the operations room and alert the police through messages about any crime or suspicious movements taking place around commercial or industrial areas.
