The Dubai Police have rescued two children - a five-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl - who were being exploited and forced to live in shabby conditions by an elderly couple belonging to a GCC country. The couple claimed that they found the kids abandoned at their doorstep. They had been keeping the children in their house illegally, without getting their identification papers for documenting them or informing the police or authorities.
Aysha Hassan Murad of Dubai Police's Victim Care Department, said: "We received a tip-off and rushed to the site where we found the two children, whose features made it apparent that they were not biologically related to the couple. Moreover, the couple - who are in their sixties - couldn't have had such small children at such an age." She added: "We also found that the children were languishing in neglect."
When questioned, the couple confessed that they didn't have children of their own and were unaware who the parents of the two kids were. They said that first they found the boy at the doorstep of their house and later the girl at the same place. However, they didn't refer them to hospitals, police or child care foundation and decided to take care of them on their own, Aysha pointed out.
She said: "A neighbour told us that the couple exploited the two children and forced them to do household jobs that did not suit their age. They didn't look after the kids but kept them in a deplorable condition."
The police conducted DNA tests which proved that the two children did not biologically belong to the couple and they were referred to the Child Care Foundation.
Brigadier Lt-Col Rashid Al Falasi, director of the crime monitoring department of the Dubai Police, praised the Victim Care Department for acting swiftly and saving the kids.
He pointed out that the department monitors problems related to children and finds solutions to tackle them. "The department deals and coordinates with other departments concerned to prevent any kind of abuse - including psychological, physical and sexual - and negligence of children, while providing a safe environment to the child," he added.
"When we receive a report of child abuse, we assess the case and take the necessary action to safeguard the child's rights," Al Falasi underlined.
