A murder mystery has been solved in Dubai, thanks to a new silicone-based casting material technique - which has been used for the first time in the region - police have said.
According to the Dubai Police, a gang attacked the victim and it was found that he was stabbed to death. All the gang members were arrested, but it was difficult to identify the person who inflicted the fatal injury.
Experts of forensic science and criminology then used the silicone-casting technique on the victim's body. It helped them detect the size and shape of the blade that caused the victim's death.
They compared the silicone cast with several blades found at the crime scene to identify the murder weapon. Fingerprints on the weapon were then taken and matched with that of the killer.
Major-General Ibrahim Khalil Al Mansouri, assistant to the Dubai Police commander-in-chief for criminal investigation affairs, stressed the force's keenness to seek excellence and innovation in various fields of police work, including forensics and criminology, "using all resources to identify the perpetrators accurately".
He pointed out that the Dubai Police's forensics and criminology department is equipped with highly qualified national cadres, who provide compelling evidence to the judicial authorities to ensure that justice is served.
