An Arab man is standing trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance on multiple charges that include blasphemy and assault of police officers.
Public prosecution records show that on February 1, the 23-year-old accused behaved aggressively with two police officers while resisting arrest and causing permanent injury to an officer. He also used obscene language talking about religion, verbally abused the officers and threatened to kill them once he walked out of the police station.
He is accused of consuming alcohol without a permit and committing an indecent act in public.
A policeman said they received a report about an assault incident in Al Muraqqabat around 8.30am. "I went with a colleague to the scene which was outside a hotel. The defendant, who was on crutches, was seen in a fit of rage. He claimed he had just been assaulted by unknown people. Even as we tried to calm him down, he kept screaming and tried to assault us with his crutches. But we took them away. He verbally abused us while telling us to bring him justice."
The accused then removed his clothes while talking with contempt about religion.
The defendant grabbed the witness' colleague by his uniform. "He tried to punch my colleague and I fell down and hurt my right knee as I tried to stop him while he was fiercely resisting arrest. We handcuffed him and took him into custody."
The policeman said that at the police station, the accused spat on officers and insulted people there.
The other officer corroborated his colleague's statement. "The defendant was angry, saying he had just been assaulted and robbed of Dh2,000.
The forensic report showed that the policeman was left with a permanent injury.
The trial has been postponed to September 15.
