A British man has gone on trial at the Dubai Court of First Instance after he assaulted an on-duty police officer at the Dubai International Airport.
According to public prosecution records, the 37-year-old man of Asian origin, on a visit visa, behaved aggressively with the officer. He stepped on his foot and pushed him.
He is also accused of threatening and verbally abusing the cop.
The incident took place on July 14.
The defendant's confrontation with the police officer followed an earlier problem he had with an airline's Indian employee, to whom he issued threats.
He told the latter that he was a British and could have him lose his job and deport him to his home country. He also flashed his finger in front of him.
The accused filmed that employee and other staff as well as travellers, which created a lot of commotion. He was then under the influence of alcohol.
Prosecutors accused him of assaulting, threatening and verbally abusing an on-duty police officer, committing an indecent act in public, using technology to breach others' privacy and consuming alcohol without a licence.
During public prosecution investigation, the police officer said: "I was on duty at 7am on July 14 at Terminal 3 when I was alerted about a problem at a gate of a flight bound for Britain. I went there and saw the accused screaming and insulting the staff in a state of rage. As I approached him and introduced myself, he insulted me and then stepped on my right foot while pushing me back with both his hands. He then told me he is a British and could cause me trouble and would smash my face. The man took out his mobile phone and began filming the staff and travellers at the gate."
An Indian airline supervisor, 44, recounted to the prosecutor how the defendant became agitated as he would not wait till his passport and travel ticket were checked before boarding the plane. "He then insulted my supervisor as the latter tried to calm him down and explain the procedures to him. He insulted his sister and mother and threatened him. He also made threats and was verbally abusive towards a police officer."
The traveller has been placed in detention ever since. His mobile phone was seized.
The court will pronounce a verdict on October 11.
