A drug addict has gone on trial on the charge of putting the lives of nine police officers at risk after he intentionally crashed his car into theirs as they were executing an arrest warrant.
The 25-year-old Emirati student is also accused in the Court of First Instance of intentionally causing damage to public property. He did not attend the hearing on Wednesday.
A police corporal from the anti-narcotics department said they had warrants to arrest some suspects in drug-related cases on May 3. They also had warrants to raid some suspects' houses, including that of the defendant.
"I went with other colleagues to the defendant's house in Al Warqa. We were in three cars. The defendant, who was outside his villa, reversed his car and intentionally crashed into my car.
"In his attempt to escape, the defendant then crashed into the other two police cars. We chased him and caught him later after he got involved in a traffic accident."
The corporal said the defendant had two companions in his car: An Emirati and a Pakistani.
"We arrested him and referred him to the public prosecution for trial after his drug use was confirmed," the corporal said.
The officer also told the prosecutor: "The student was later charged with intentionally damaging the police cars and with putting the lives of nine police officers, including mine, at risk."
A technical repair report showed that the car's repair cost was estimated at Dh6,700.
The trial will resume on November 8.
