A GCC national was fined Dh1,000 by the Fujairah Traffic Court for illegally modifying his car and escaping from a traffic patrol.
The police patrol had asked the young driver to pull over, but he tried to escape and was arrested. He was referred to the Fujairah Traffic Prosecution. The prosecution requested the court to order the imprisonment of the defendant or 24 black points on the driving licence and the confiscation of his car.
As per the Federal Traffic Law, a fine of Dh800, 12 black points and the vehicle confiscation for 30 days are slapped on any driver involved in escaping from a traffic police patrol.
Also, the Federal Traffic Law No 178 of 2017 states that noise-inducing vehicles found in violation will be fined Dh2,000 and 12 black points. The penalty of loud car music is Dh400 and four black points.
Early in July, the Ministry of Interior announced that over 11,000 motorists were fined on the UAE roads last year for driving modified cars that caused noise and nuisance. "The drivers, especially youngsters, were caught while creating clamour with modified cars and causing disturbance to residents."
Traffic authorities said the practice of making noise with modified cars is annoying to other drivers and scary for road users and nearby residents.
The authorities warned that drivers racing on the streets and those with modified cars will be stopped, legal action taken against them and their vehicles seized. Police have also warned that amplifying the horn to create noise is banned in the country.
