Debts worth over Dh5 million were settled out of court in Ajman, through an initiative recently launched by the emirate's police. As many as 362 people have benefitted from the initiative.
Lt-Col Saeed Khalifa Al Ketbi, director of Al Madinah Police Centre in Ajman Police, said the programme was introduced to help solve financial disputes that were lodged during the first half of the year. These mainly involved debts related to vehicle rentals and real estate deals.
"To settle such disputes, mutual agreements on a payment mechanism are reached, with the interest of both the parties taken into consideration," said Lt-Col Al Ketbi.
He said that through the initiative - called 'Contact us and we will take care of you' - residents have been given the opportunity to pay off their debts at police stations, before cases are referred to court.
"It also protects the complainants' rights and makes sure that their money is given back to them." He added that a case is referred
to the prosecution and the court only if the defendant has a criminal record. Al Ketbi said the initiative has gone a long way in easing the workload of the public prosecution and courts.
