The Republic of Chile is set to host the next general assembly of the International Police Organisation (Interpol) in 2019, the body announced on the final day of the 87th Interpol session in Dubai on Wednesday.
At the closing ceremony, Major-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police, handed the Interpol flag to Héctor Espinosa Valenzuela, director-general of the Chilean National Police, signifying that Chile will be the host of the 88th Interpol General Assembly next year.
In a speech he delivered at the end of the activities, Valenzuela thanked the assembly for giving Chile the opportunity to be the next Interpol session venue.
The last day of the four-day meet held in Madinat Jumeirah also saw the election of the Interpol's new president, Kim Jong-yang of South Korea.
"I thank all the delegations that contributed to the success of the 87th session, which established the pillars of cooperation among all members," Kim said, thanking the UAE for its hospitality.
Six new members were also elected into the Interpol's 13-member executive committee: Néstor Roncaglia of Argentina as vice-president for the Americas; Major-General Dr Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, Inspector-General of the UAE Ministry of Interior as the body's delegate for Asia; Jannine van den Berg of the Netherlands as delegate for Europe; Noboru Nakatani of Japan as another delegate for Asia; Gilles Michaud of Canada for the Americas; and Destino Pedro of Angola for Africa. Delegates will be serving a three-year term.
Wrapping up the event and thanking the participants, Major-General Al Marri said: "We are honoured in the UAE to host this event in the Year of Zayed and close to the celebration of the National Day. We hope that the conference can achieve all its aspirations."
The final day of the assembly in Dubai was also attended by Jürgen Stock, secretary-general of Interpol, along with the rest of the 1,300 delegates, including 40 ministers and 85 police chiefs from all over the world.
Vanuatu and Kiribati also officially received their Interpol flags as new members of the body.
