Starting today, the popular Sheri and Safi will be available in local fish markets, following a two-month fishing and selling ban ordered by the Dubai Municipality to preserve these two kinds of Arabian fish.
The municipal order came in accordance with Ministerial Decision No. 501 of 2015 on the regulation of catching and selling of the sheri and safi fishes during its breeding season from March 1 to April 30.
According to Eng. Hussain Lootah, Director General of the Dubai Municipality (DM), the ban was put in place to preserve and grow the stockpile of these two kinds of fish in local seawater.
Lootah expressed his appreciation and gratitude to all fishermen and fish traders, who showed their commitment not to catch them during the ban period, which ended in no violations.
The DM inspectors only warned two fishmongers in March, who saved up a few quantity of sheri fish in refrigerators, which were seized by the municipality.
The municipality launched an awareness campaign in January and distributed guidebooks to fishermen and fish sellers notifying them about the ministerial decision.
Engr. Alyaa Al Harmoodi, Director of the Environment Department of Dubai Municipality, said more than 400 fish stands at the Deira Fish Market and Umm Suqeim Fish Port were inspected during the campaign.
