The Ajman Civil Defence has banned the use of generators in residential and commercial buildings in the emirate to protect the environment and ensure fire safety.
The department has granted building and tower owners using generators to supply tenants a three-month grace period to connect their buildings with the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) power and water supply grids.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, Ajman Civil Defence Director-General Salih Al Matroushi said that following the completion of the three month grace period, inspections will be carried out, and tenants will be evacuated from buildings with uncooperative owners.
"Now circulars have been sent to these buildings to notify them of the decision and urge them to cooperate in order to avoid tough penalties," he said.
He noted that Ajman Municipality has coordinated with Fewa to accelerate the connection process of all commercial and residential buildings in order to supply water and power to tenants.
Al Matroushi said the decision is aimed at protecting lives and properties as well as protecting the environment. The practice of using generators to supply power is no longer needed, as all necessary power can be supplied by Fewa.
There are many fire accidents caused by generators in various areas of the emirate.
An official at Ajman's Fewa branch said landlords should have stopped using these generators a "long time" ago, and noted that Fewa is ready to supply power to these buildings as soon as possible, as long as owners take the initiative to come to the Fewa office to fill out forms, provide documents and pay the fees. The connection team immediately processes the connections.
Tenants have expressed concern that they'll be the ones who suffer is landlords fail to cooperate, as they will be asked to vacate their residences and move to other, less-affordable areas.
