Amid inter-city travel ban, a major evacuation process is underway at the Abu Dhabi airport with scores of special flights in operation. With passengers travelling from other cities or Al Ain and Al Ruwais to Abu Dhabi, the national carrier Etihad Airways requested passengers to keep booking confirmation or ticket handy for a quick check.
"Travel between Abu Dhabi and other emirates is currently restricted. If you are travelling between emirates to reach the airport, you will need to present your booking confirmation or ticket if requested by officials. Only passengers booked on one of our special flights will be permitted to travel to the airport," Etihad Airways said.
However there were people like Munavvir P., a stranded Indian national based in Al Ain. Taking no chances, he travelled to Abu Dhabi before the travel ban was imposed on Tuesday midnight even though his flight to Kozhikode in Kerala state was only by Wednesday afternoon.
"I came on visit visa and got stuck here. I am out of money and struggled with food and accommodation," Munavvir said.
