Six Asian sailors were each sentenced to six months in jail by the Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Court for smuggling and trading in petroleum products while venturing into the emirate's regional waters and polluting the environment. They were also ordered to pay a fine of Dh100,000 each.
The case came to light when the UAE coast guard patrols spotted the six men on three motor boats. The smugglers were nabbed red-handed and referred to the RAK public prosecution, where they admitted to their crime.
Investigations show that the defendants did not have any official documents or declaration papers. They admitted that they failed to take any safety precautionary measures to prevent any leak in their boats.
The court, presided over by Chief Judge Sameh Shaker, ordered the confiscation of the petroleum products along with the motor boats used in smuggling the inflammable items.
4 sailors convicted, 2 acquitted
Earlier, the RAK Criminal Court convicted four of the six Asian sailors involved in smuggling 700 tonnes of petroleum products and ordered them to serve different jail terms.
The court, presided over by Chief Judge Sameh Shaker, sentenced two residents to two years in jail, and ordered them to pay a fine of Dh150,000 each.
The third and fourth accused were ordered to serve six months in prison, and pay a fine of Dh150,000 each, while the fifth and sixth suspects were exonerated.
The court also ordered the confiscation of the petroleum products seized along with the motor boat used in smuggling these products.
