Owners of laundry shops were urged to adhere to hygiene standards after dozens of establishments were caught flouting the rules.
The Al Ain Municipality has fined 47 laundry shops and issued warnings to 114 others for violating hygiene laws.
The establishments were identified in 234 inspection visits carried out by municipal officials on various laundry shops across Al Ain city in the recent weeks, said the authorities.
Most of the laundries were fined for operating in dirty premises and dumping waste near the premises.
Fines of up to Dh5,000 were imposed on the establishments caught carrying out unhygienic and illegal practices.
Offenders were given a grace period of two weeks, starting from the date the warning was issued, to take corrective actions at their workplaces. The civic body said follow up inspections will be conducted tat these shops during the grace period.
Ali Saeed Al Kutbi, head of public health department at Al Ain Municipality, said: "Laundry shops should comply with the municipal guidelines and laws to protect the health and safety of community members."
The municipality said that the inspection campaigns are part of its efforts to preserve the health of the community, follow up on these facilities and spot any violations that may undermine the safety of individuals.
"Such shops create a breeding ground for spreading diseases if launderers neglect cleanliness and disinfection or mix clothing with other washing," said the official.
The civic body has vowed not to tolerate those who violate the applicable health standards or whatever undermines the health of community members.
