A four-year-old Indian boy drowned off Sharjah's Al Khan Beach recently, the police revealed on Saturday. The police managed to rescue the mother, who had rushed into the sea to rescue her child, identified as Mohammed A.M.
After bystanders notified the police, rescue teams rushed to the area and rescued the 30-year-old mother who was on the verge of drowning. The boy and his mother were rushed to Al Qassimi Hospital, where the boy was declared dead.
The police said the woman and her son went to the beach for a picnic. The boy sneaked away and went into the water without his mother's knowledge.
The father, who was not present at the beach when the incident took place, identified the body at the hospital.
This is the third case of drowning in the past 10 days in Sharjah.
On September 30, five people drowned off beaches in Dubai and Sharjah, while five others narrowly escaped death due to unusually rough seas.
In Dubai, three people - one Indian and two Sri Lankans - drowned off the Umm Suqeim beach area near the Burj Al Arab. In Sharjah, the bodies of two men - a 42-year-old Syrian and a 24-year-old Somali - were pulled from the sea off Al Hamriya and Al Khan beaches.
Despite warnings from the authorities about high waves, residents continue to venture into seas.
The Sharjah Police and the Ajman Civil Defence have warned beachgoers that with the winter approaching, the sea could be more rough and dangerous.
Both the authorities issued warnings to beachgoers and fishermen to take extra care during the season when high tidal waves occur. They also urged parents to keep an eye on their children, and to report any incident to the rescue teams deployed on the beaches.
