The Ajman Police will release 30 inmates who were jailed for failing to pay their debts and blood money. The total amount to be settled for these 30 inmates is Dh9.5 million.
The police have urged banks, financial institutions, companies and charity organisations to support the move and make donations.
"Ninety-three per cent of the total number of the inmates to be released are involved in debt cases, while seven per cent had to pay blood money," said Col Mubarak Al Rezzi, Director-General of Ajman Punitive and Reformatory Establishments (APRE).
He said Arabs topped the list by 47 per cent from the total number, followed by Asians (30 per cent), Emiratis (13%), Africans (7%) and GCC nationals (3%).
Brig. Shaikh Sultan Al Nuaimi, Ajman Police chief, said that the decision comes as part of the initiative titled "Take Away My Worries and Bring Happiness to My Family".
He said that the initiative is aimed at strengthening the cooperation and happiness spirit by helping those who are drowned in debts to have an opportunity to change their situation.
"There are a lot of donations provided by generous people to the police in order to settle inmates' debts and help them return to their families." Brig Shaikh Al Nuaimi, said that the Ajman Police have formed a committee to execute the initiative, based on accurate standards to select the deserved inmates to settle their debts.
Col Al Rezzi said that the APRE is taking great efforts to release the inmates with debts as soon as possible by contacting philanthropists and charities to donate money to settle their debts.
The initiative would contribute in ensuring social stability, when these inmates return to their families and integrate in the society one again.
Col. Al Rezzi explained that the committee would study the cases of the inmates with debts and contact their complainants to negotiate the amount.
Then, the committee would contact support establishments and embassies for donation to solve the issues. The committee also would ensure that the inmates are not involved in any criminal charges and they don't have a criminal record.
The inmates who are supposed to pay blood money also should be free of any criminal charges.
The donated amount will be handed over to the Ajman Civil court which would settle the dues to the families of the victims on their behalf.
