Dubai has confiscated nearly 20 million counterfeit items around the emirate last year - such as handbags, cosmetics, sunglasses and perfumes, which amounted to Dh332 million in terms of total value.
The hotspot continues to be the Karama market, where thousands of counterfeit products are sold to consumers. However, items are seized from all over the emirate, including Ras Al Khor.
The Dubai Economic Department (DED) revealed the latest figures to media on Tuesday. They also displayed how they destroy such items.
Jama Abdulla Alfalasi, the manager of the Intellectual Property Disputes Unit at Dubai Economy, said: "The total number of items that were confiscated were 19.9 million and it amounted to Dh332 million. The number of cosmetics that were confiscated were the most and in terms of monetary value, mobile phones and its accessories ranked first."
DED receives complaints from consumers, companies and mother companies of brands which file cases on the authority's website.
In 2018, DED received approximately 2,000 files that were uploaded onto their system.
