The country experienced more than a dozen sandstorms last year, an unprecedented number that was attributed to desertification
According to a senior official, the mishap occurred when a minibus, travelling towards Ras Al Khaimah, suddenly veered off the road, entered the other side of the road and collided head-on with another vehicle coming from the opposite direction. Both drivers were killed instantly.
Lt. Col. Saeed Obaid bin Aran, Director of Traffic and Patrols Department at the UAQ Directorate-General of Police, attributed the accident to speeding as well as the inattentiveness of the minibus driver, who veered off the road, hit the metal barrier dividing the road and entered into the other direction all of a sudden.
The traffic patrols, alerted of the mishap, rushed to the scene, removed the crashed vehicles and shifted the bodies to the Umm Al Quwain Hospital. “All motorists are highly urged to drive carefully, avoid speeding and driving when feeling tired,” Lt. Col. Aran said.
Late last week, three people had sustained moderate injuries in a traffic accident on King Faisal Road opposite Carrefour in Umm Al Quwain few minutes before the Iftar.
