The Sharjah Police fined 2,227 people in 2013 for parking their vehicles in slots meant for people with special needs.
The police said more than 2,000 people “intentionally violated the rights of people with special needs” by parking their cars in areas specially marked for them.
“Despite being healthy, these people are so selfish that they violate the rights of people with special needs. Genuine people with special needs are forced to park their cars far from the slots meant for them, which makes things very difficult for them,” the police said.
Drivers, the police said, commit the offence repeatedly, claiming that they could not find parking spots. The police also discovered that some people resorted to fraudulent activities like sticking fake special needs signs on their cars.
Besides this, many people also parked their cars in front of fire and emergency exits, which is supposed to be used only in case of fire or emergencies. Civil Defence officials booked such violations on discovering them on their way to emergencies like fire.
Lieutenant-Colonel Ahmed bin Darwish, director of the traffic department of Sharjah Police, said parking vehicles in special needs zones “is a violation of the rights of people with special needs”.
“Parking cars in front of fire exits prevent the Civil Defence from doing their job. Time is very important for Civil Defence officials.”
He said violations increased at night time after 10pm, “as some think that there is no monitoring at night”.
“They park their cars at night, thinking they will move them early in the mornings. They are mistaken because the police patrol round the clock to check on violations so as to prevent any kind of act that endanger people’s lives,” he said.
He called on the public to inform the Sharjah Police in case they spot violations. He informed that the fine for parking cars at special needs zone is Dh1,000 and the person would be issued four black points.
