Dubai — Illegal taxi service providers will face hefty fines as part of a new campaign by Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority (RTA). Working in close partnership with the General Headquarters of Dubai Police, the Saher campaign aims at protecting commuters from illegal transport services in the emirate.
“The illegal picking up of passengers is practiced in certain areas. But the taxi drivers keep changing the pickup points of passengers in a bid to avoid getting caught,” said Abdullah Al Mahra, Director of Franchising and Enforcement, RTA Public Transport Agency.
Several types of vehicles such as private cars, rented cars, commercial transport vehicles and private company vehicles are found to be involved ferrying passengers illegally.
“Although under the intensive enforcement and hefty fines in place, new comers are still found to be involved in this activity. Some of these are former taxi drivers who, after the taxi business was regularised in other emirates, had to convert their cabs into private vehicles and opted to use them in such unlicensed passenger transport activities in Dubai,” added Al Mahra.
Protecting Dubai’s image as a tourist-friendly city with safe services, the campaign aims at creating awareness among commuters.
“This activity is a negative phenomenon which is in sharp contrast with the status and repute of Dubai as a regional business and economic hub. It unravels RTA’s efforts and keenness to broaden and upgrade the transportation sector, let alone the substantial damage inflicted by this activity on the service, tourist, and social sectors among other key sectors.”
