The Dh2-billion Dubai Water Canal Project and Dh1-billion Al Ittihad Bridge together with the Dubai Tram Project this year will make 2014 a very challenging year for the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, said the Dubai Water Canal Project, which will link Business Bay with the Arabian Gulf, passing through the heart of Dubai and extending three kilometres, will be “Dubai’s largest ever qualitative project” to be embarked on this year.
He also said the “RTA’s achievements and successes over the past years is the positive outcome of the directives, unlimited support and close follow-up of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council; and Shaikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Vice-Chairman of the Executive Council.
Even as Al Tayer looked forward to a very challenging 2014, he also highlighted the completion of vital RTA projects in 2013, the most notable being the opening of all intersections of Al Khail Road costing Dh1.9 billion, the Dh722-million Rashid Hospital Tunnels, and the Dh719-million World Trade Center bridges at Zabeel.
The other achievements in 2013 included the widening and improvement of Umm Suqeim Road as well as the construction of many flyovers, the launch of a wide range of smart applications that enabled customers to complete their transactions via smart phones and rendering the visit to the RTA customer service centres unnecessary.
Al Tayer said the RTA’s efforts were highly repaid by winning five key awards in the various categories of the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart Government Programme, including the Best Government Service for the Express Metro Initiative according to a public vote.
