A total of 1,750 traffic accidents were recorded on the internal roads and highways of the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah from May to July this year, which is 23.4 per cent less as compared to the corresponding period last year. As many as 2,285 road accidents were recorded from May to July in 2017.
The significant drop in the accidents can be attributed to installation of new sophisticated radars, pointed out Brigadier Dr Mohammed Saeed Al Humaidi, director of the central operations of RAK Police.
"More traffic patrols have also been deployed at the hot spots and on arterial roads of the emirate, including the Qussaidat, Nakheel, Corniche Al Qawasim, Old Ras Al Khaimah, Mohammed bin Salem, and Airport roads," he added.
"The intensified campaigns launched by the police have also boosted drivers' awareness about the hazards of road accidents."
The roads of the emirate have not witnessed any grave traffic accident this year so far, he stated.
"The smart radars and cameras have significantly curbed serious violations, such as speeding at intersections, jumping red traffic lights, failing to observe lane demarcation, and sudden swerving."
Road casualties go down by 50%
The road casualties have also reduced by 50 per cent from May to July this year as compared to the same period last year, he underlined.
"This is mainly due to drivers' compliance with the traffic rules and regulations which have become tougher following recent amendments."
Lately, the police have installed 15 radars on four major intersections, including the RAK Mall, Nakheel Cinema, Al Shifa Pharmacy, and Al Rams Traffic Light, Al Humaidi said.
"These are in addition to one radar on the intersection of Cove Rotana Hotel, apart from a number of mobile radars at different places."
He said all the radars used by the police are precise and of high quality.
"If there's any problem, the traffic and patrol department immediately takes action, fixes the faulty gadget, and reconsiders the recorded fine."
Police authorities across the UAE implemented the changes in the federal traffic law, which came into effect on July 1, 2017.
"The new rules are meant to curb traffic violations and casualties and enhance road safety around the country."
