Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate Director Brigadier Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi said motorcyclists who wrongly overtake other vehicles while on the road, or zig zag through slow traffic to change lanes, will have their motorbikes impounded for a week, be slapped with a Dh200 fine, and given three demerit black points for the offence.
“As many as 32 traffic accidents in which motorbikes were involved were reported last year, which resulted in three people sustaining serious injuries, and 26 others were moderately hurt,” he said, noting that offences reported against motorcyclists stood at 936.
Al Harithi said it was dangerous for motorcyclists to overtake while cars were stationary at traffic signals, or weave through cars when traffic accidents take place as it jeopardised the lives of the motorcyclists and other road users.
Traffic disciplinary patrols and city traffic intelligence in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western region, as well as the surveillance cameras fixed on the traffic signals on road junctions, have started enforcing article (116) Dangerous Overtaking of Motorbikes, which includes overtaking in general and riding through stationary motor vehicles at road junctions as well as traffic jams, he reiterated.
Al Harithi urged all motorcyclists not to undertake any dangerous overtaking of cars for their safety, as it could result in being issued a fine and the impoundment of their motorbike.
Al Harithi appealed to motorcycle riders to adhere to the safety measures for protection from injuries resulting from motorcycle incidents, which increase 35 times compared with injuries caused by accidents in which motor vehicles are involved.
He reminded the motorcyclists of the importance of wearing a helmet and protective clothing.
He also called on families to keep an eye on their children during the school summer holidays and advised them of the risks of riding on internal streets, highways and on sandy areas.
Motorcyclists should not ride in public places and near residential areas, as police traffic patrols will be strongly present on internal streets and highways to catch motorcyclists who violate the law, he warned.
