Gasquet, the 11th seed, was scheduled to face Rainer Schuettler on Court One, but the back problem left him with no choice but to pull out and he will now have 10 days to recover in time to play at Wimbledon.

The 23-year-old, who reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2007, had looked in good form before the injury struck at Queen’s as he defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori and America’s Rajeev Ram.

Schuettler receives a walkover into the quarter-finals, where he will play either four-time champion Andy Roddick or Israel’s Dudi Sela.
