Very few global destinations offer integrated packages of entertainment experiences
Microsoft chief software architect Ray Ozzie revealed the official launch date for what has been described as “Windows in the Cloud” at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles
Microsoft became an industry powerhouse selling packaged software such as Windows operating systems and Office work programs but has joined the trend towards cloud computing, where programs are hosted on the Internet.
Cloud computing lets firms essentially rent text, spreadsheet, calendar or other programs as needed and avoid the cost or buying, installing, updating and maintaining software on workplace machines.
Industry tracker Gartner forecast last week that revenue from cloud computing will top 14 billion dollars annually by the end of 2013.
Ozzie said the first month of Windows Azure will be free and clients will be billed from February.
He described Windows Azure as part of a “three screens and a cloud” future where software is delivered across personal computers, phones and televisions connected by cloud-based services.
“Customers want choice and flexibility in how they develop and deploy applications,” Ozzie said.
“We’re moving into an era of solutions that are experienced by users across PCs, phones and the Web, and that are delivered from data centers we refer to as private clouds and public clouds,” he said.
Microsoft has been under increasing pressure to offer cloud services in response to moves by Amazon and arch-rival Google, which has been rolling out free Internet-based applications such as its Web-hosted email program Gmail.
Amazon, the Internet retail giant, offers an online application platform known as the Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).
