Ras Al Khaimah and Dibba Al Fujairah residents will soon be able to use the UAE's official geo-addressing system, Makani App, to give directions.
On the sidelines of Gitex Technology week, Dubai Municipality signed an agreement with municipalities from both emirates on Monday to start installing Makani plates on buildings.
Through the agreement, DM will provide training and technical consultation to those involved at Ras Al Khaimah and Dibba Al Fujairah municipalities.
The two municipalities, in return, will provide DM with updated spatial data of landmarks within their geographical jurisdictions to be used within the Makani application system.
The app, launched in 2015, allows users to share their location's 10-digit coordinates, as displayed on Makani plates installed on buildings, to simplify the process of giving directions to building entrances, within an accuracy of one metre square of the pin selected. The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Department at DM recently installed 20,000 plates in Ajman, with 20,000 more to be implemented.
Umm Al Quwain was added to the list, but no plates are yet installed, according to an official from the emirate's Makani team.
The GIS department is looking to make the smart system a national project across the country.
Ten food outlets in Dubai have signed an agreement to use Makani app with the aim to cover the emirate through installing over 130,000 plates by the first quarter of 2017.
"We are committed to train and educate the food outlets to use the app, which will be applied to all establishments and areas throughout Dubai," said Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of DM.
The app is currently being used in free zones, residential areas and government buildings.
"The Jebel Ali Free Zone recently used it to report an incident to the police, who reached the spot within three minutes," said Lootah.
The smart system has already been implemented by Dubai Police and Civil Defence in emergency situations.
