Consider this situation for next season: Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel are racing to the final turn and then it's a straight dash to the championship. Want to know the mental state of drivers at this point? - Their heart rates, stress levels, G-force, respiration and body temperature.
British duo of Benjamin Lambert and Alexander Gibson has a concept app, which can dish out all these details and more for fans to feel the adrenaline rush. So, no wonder then that this idea clinched the 2017 F1 Connectivity Innovation Prize and won $50,000.
Their revolutionary project is based on the use of Internet of Things, mobile technologies and embedded connectivity, and will take the experience of fans to a whole new level.
Lambert said the features will be an addition to the existing Formula One app. The app uses Near-field Communications (NFC) based mixed reality platform. Fans can use their mobile phone to connect to dozens of sensors at the circuit and have real-time monitoring of drivers' vital stats, and get augmented footage of racing action from vantage points and time frames. It will also help with logistics information, making ticketing smarter and shows ways to reach the track.
"It can be embedded into the tickets and make the ticket smarter," he said about the post-race features.
Elaborating on the race services, Gibson said: "Fans can know the accuracy of any driver over the course of the race."
The app gives an idea about the fitness level and strain drivers go through.
"It could be comparisons between the first laps and final ones. In the dying laps, it gets tense and it would be interesting to know how it affects the drivers and the physical change in the body."
Talking about how this is made possible, he said: "We use biometric gloves for drivers. It will have sensors and pick up data."
The duo added the intricacies need further investigation.
The ceremony was hosted by Tata Communications, the official connectivity provider to Formula 1 and the official managed connectivity supplier of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport. And it was F1 managing director of motorsport Ross Brawn and four-time champion Lewis Hamilton, who named the winners. Now it solely depends if or not Formula One wants to spice up things for fans and push such concepts in future.
