A Chinese tourist spent 15 hours in jail in Hull, East Yorkshire, England, after she was held for driving too slow. Qiaoyon Wang was on her way to visit friends in Hull and was driving a rented car on a highway in Hessle on Wednesday when police stopped her for driving at 40mph in a 70mph zone. Wang was asked to pay on-the-spot fine of £100 for traffic violation but was taken into a prison cell after she told police that she was unable to pay the amount, according to Daily Mail.
The 39-year-old tourist called the police 'cruel' and said that when a police car flashed its lights at her Ford Focus, she mistook it for as an acceptable signal from the police. Wang appeared in Hull Magistrates' Court where prosecution lawyer Andrew Stirling said a police car became alert after noticing that Wang was driving very slow and wandering from lane to lane.
Stirling said, "There is no crime in doing less than 70mph on a dual carriageway. There is no entry, so far as I'm aware, in the Highway Code that recognises a headlight flashing in someone's mirror as an acceptable signal from the police."
Wang admitted through a Mandarin interpreter that she was driving without attention and suffered a short-term lapse in concentration and treated the outside lane as if it was the slow lane.
Janice Petherbridge, Chairman of the Bench, told Wang: "We have heard what has been said about the circumstances, and we feel the fact that you have spent approximately 15 hours in custody is sufficient punishment for this offence. We therefore make an absolute discharge, which means that will be the end of this matter. Enjoy the rest of your holiday."
Wang had been visiting friends in Sheffield, where she previously studied, and was making her way to Hull University to meet another group of friends.
