After spending his whole life with 9 toes on one foot, a Chinese man has finally gone through surgery to remove his extra digits.
The 21-year-old, known only as Ajun, has been given a new lease on life after the surgery. According to The Daily Mail , a team headed by Dr Wu Xiang from Shunde Heping Surgical Hospital in Foshan took nine hours to complete the procedure. Along with removing the extra toes, they forged a new big toe for him and moved it into the ideal position.
"It's very rare to see such a serious deformity having not been treated in a 21-year-old patient," Dr Xiang noted. Ajun has explained that his parents did not want him to have his extra toes removed as a child, believing it to be a good omen.
Ajun was made to feel 'imperfect' during his childhood due to this condition, throwing away his sandals during his third year of primary school and avoiding social interaction.
He will be discharged from the hospital in a few weeks, and has expressed his gratitude. "I'm very grateful to Dr Wu Xiang. I think my foot is perfect. He showed me pictures of my foot after surgery and I'm very happy."
