An 18-year-old Chinese girl, who weighed 125kg, slipped into a coma as her blood sugar shot up 25 times higher than normal limit due to her addiction to sweetened bubble tea.
The teenager had been consuming bubble tea, which is high in sugar, at least twice daily for a whole month. She was rushed to Shanghai's Ruijin Hospital after she fell into a diabetic coma due to hyperglycemia, a dangerously high level of blood sugar levels, IBT reported.
The teenager's family said she complained of nausea, frequent urination, and excess thirst the week before she was discovered unconscious on May 2. The teen was put on a ventilator and hemodialysis for five days after which she woke up from her coma.
The girl had been addicted to sugary drinks and spent nearly $20 daily on bubble tea and soft drinks, her mother revealed.
According to NYP reports, an average cup of bubble tea contains 54 grams of sugar, while regular iced tea has around 22 grams of sugar, according to Healthline and the US Department of Agriculture.
