Sharjah, the cultural capital of the UAE, knows very well of the need to inculcate reading habit of books among the youth. That is why book festivals, along with other leisure activities, are a regular feature of its vibrant and dynamic mosaic.
It is promising that a survey on the eve of the ongoing book festival found more than 64 per cent of people are fond of reading in the emirates, and wait for an opportunity to lay their hands on books.
Organisations like Knowledge Without Borders, distributes free books among nationals. They are popular, and people flock to get new prints of their preferred subjects. Libraries are a big draw in the UAE, as people look for value-added environment while they browse through books, journals and manuscripts.
Addiction and love of real books may seem tough in this digital age, and it is easier said than done to promote the habit of reading among the young. The survey by KWB says that a little over 58 per cent acknowledged they had no passion for reading. This is where such cultural activities and incentives have a role to play.
The need to focus on developing reading skills and promoting awareness about the importance of reading, especially among the youth and children, should be a national goal. This is the easiest way to not only undo illiteracy but also to enlighten society.
