Residents of Sharjah, on the eve of the Holy Month of Ramadan, have a reason to cheer. More than 40 petrol stations that were abruptly closed some time back will be back in business. Most of the shut service stations of Enoc and Eppco were in the city limits due to which people living in the cultural hub of the UAE had to be extra conscious of fuel levels in their cars. The closure had caused long queues for refuelling at the limited number of pumps and a rise in population in the emirate had brought extra burden on them.
It is a huge relief that Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) will now run these stations in Sharjah, leading to a easing of the crunchy demand and supply situation.
It is also quite relieving to learn that more than 190 petrol stations are in full swing now in Sharjah, which are suffice enough to cater to the needs of people living even in the far-flung zones of the emirate. Some of the areas of Sharjah are home to sand dunes and desert safari activities, and it is essential that such sporting and recreation activities centres are self-reliant in fuel storage and sales.
The decision of the Sharjah Department of Planning and Survey to manage the fuel warehouse that previously belonged to Emarat is a step in the right direction. It is also essential that upcoming developmental projects in Sharjah and its countryside be duly backed with not only basic civic amenities but also with the provision of a fuel station at every 10km.
