Lebanon's politics have been driven by sectarian interests and a militia that has ensconced itself as the proxy of a foreign power while playing kingmaker that props up governments. Balanced and nuanced governance and justice for all is, therefore, impossible in such a system with sectarian divisions in plain sight. Strife is common and the people are the last in line. Parties and warlords share the spoils as the constitution is sectarian by nature. It has been drafted from past rivalries that have shaped the country into a quasi-democracy.
Governance has been at a standstill for many years due to external actors and powers who have dictated and directed the course of events at the expense of the Lebanese who have only seen constant conflict for over four decades. These conflicts have ruined the economy and destroyed people's faith in their representatives. The Lebanese have protested in the past like they are doing now but to no avail; their situation remains unchanged and has been made worse by the pandemic and the explosion last week. The current government of technocrats has their hands tied by this system of sectarian reservation that goes against true representation - for the people, by the people, and of the people. Economic reforms can happen only if this fixed system is overturned and political reform is carried out in right earnest.
