Animal rescuers were left shocked after they spotted a female dog whose tail was entirely chopped off by miscreants, in Abu Dhabi. The canine was found yelping in pain and stricken with deadly infections.
The female dog was rescued by a volunteer-run group, Animal Action UAE, in Mushrif area in the UAE capital on June 25. The rescuers and the vet - who is treating the dog, named Lucy - are quite certain that it was the handiwork of miscreants.
"The vet is certain that the tail was severed by some miscreants. It would have taken more than one person to hold her down and do so - for what reason, we do not know," Animal Action's Facebook post said on July 1.
Sarita Harding, a volunteer at Animal Action, told Khaleej Times that the injuries have caused infection and Lucy is getting treated. "We are waiting for a detailed report from the vet."
Lucy is having difficulty due to the severe injuries inflicted on her. "She has had difficulty due to the lack of skin around her rear. It's painful for her," the post said.
"We are hoping the infection will go away entirely and that fresh skin will grow with the care she is getting. Most of the infected skin and flesh has been removed."
Netizens were also rattled by the abuse.
Becky Macmillan said on Facebook: "Reading this makes me livid! I can't imagine what fear and pain she has gone through! Is there any lead at all for investigation? Whoever has done this is a risk to society!"
Janette Watts said: "My heart goes out to her - what a cruel bunch of individuals - shameful does not come close. Heartless doesn't cover it."
Harding said they do not understand why anyone would torture an animal in the way they did to Lucy.
Animal Action found another dog on June 30, named Halle, whose leg was chopped off in half. The group suspects that it was also done by some miscreants. Halle will have to get her leg amputated as it has been infected. "Her leg will have to be amputated to clear the infection."
Animal abuse is a crime in the UAE. Those found guilty can be imprisoned for up to one year or imposed a fine of Dh200,000.
