A 36-year-old unemployed man was charged at a Dubai court on Thursday with assaulting two on-duty police officers.
The man, holder of a Comoros Islands passport, is also facing the charge of making criminal threats against the two officers while resisting arrest.
The incident took place on June 17 and was reported at Al Rafaa police station. Prosecutors have called for a severe penalty to be inflicted on him under the law.
A police corporal said he was on patrol duty in Al Rafaa area when he was notified by the operations room about a trespassing incident. "We moved to the house which belonged to a Pakistani man, and found the defendant lying down in the front yard.
"When we tried to wake him up, the intruder stood up and walked towards the backyard. He slapped the Pakistani man as the latter tried to stop him."
The officer was pushed and grabbed by the neck as he was trying to stop the accused and bring him under control, leaving him with a slight bruise. "He tried to hit me with a metallic candle holder he took off a table. He calmed down after a while and we took him into custody," the corporal told the prosecutor.
A police sergeant corroborated the corporal's statement, adding that they had to call for backup. "The defendant assaulted us and the resident. He also threatened us if we got near him or tried to arrest him."
The intruder then damaged some belongings in the house. When he got inside a room and locked himself inside, a police lieutenant arrived with other police officers. "We raided the room and arrested him following a swift and careful plan. The necessary action was then taken against the accused," the sergeant said.
The trial continues on December 13.
