A 35-year-old imam was stabbed to death by a divorced man during the Friday prayers at Al Rahma mosque in Giza, Egypt. After stabbing, the man tried to flee but was nabbed by the worshippers, who tied him up on the mosque premises till the cops arrived. The imam died before reaching the hospital.
According to Al Arabiya, the killer has been recognised as Ahmed, a 41-year-old man who was recently divorced. He was a professor in College of Agriculture before being expelled due to some mental illness.
Investigations found that the man entered the mosque with a knife, and during the second raka (prostration) in the prayer, stabbed the imam thrice in the back.
During interrogation, Ahmed said: "He (the imam) was Satan (devil)." He added that he had asked the victim to only read Qur'an instead of the sermon.
An eyewitness said that during the Friday sermon, the imam talked about divorce, which probably triggered the attack.
The police filed a case against the accused with the public prosecution, which referred him to a medical committee to ascertain if he suffers from mental illness.
