Star all-rounder Nitish Kumar's 36-ball 83 powered Canada to a 53-run win over Jersey in the Group B match of the ICC T20 Men's World Cup Qualifier played in Abu Dhabi.
Put into bat first at the Tolerance Oval, Canadian openers Rodrigo Thomas and Navneet Dhaliwal laid the foundation with a slow but steady 51-run partnership. Nitish continued the good work with debutant Nicholas Kirton as Canada hit 100-mark in 14 overs. The duo put on 74-run partnership.
Nitish walloped fours and sixes to reach his 50. When he was stumped 17 runs short of a maiden ton, Nitish had punished Canada with four boundaries and six towering maximums.
Chasing Canadian target of 177 runs, an in-form Jonty Jenner was the lone battler as other Jersey batsmen crumbled before the pace of Dillon Heyliger and Jeremy Gordon, who took three-wicket each. Jersey lost last four wickets for six runs and lasted just 17 overs.
Despite a comfortable win, Canadian skipper Dhaliwal felt the total was short by some 20-25 runs.
"We didn't play our best game yet, especially in the power play. We lacked a bit of intent in our batting. I think 200 is a par score there. We need to work on our power play and come out positive in our next match."
Dhaliwal was all praise for Nitish. "Credit goes to Nitish, who played really well. The way he controlled the innings in the middle overs was outstanding. He is one of our best batsmen we have."
Canada will play Nigeria at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Monday (7.30 pm) while Jersey get a day off.
Meanwhile in another match, spinners Aamir Kaleem and Khawar Ali helped Oman ease past Hong Kong by seven wickets.
Asked to bat, Hong Kong were 47 for one after eight overs but then were floored by Oman's spin attack. Only opener Nizakat Khan offered any resistance as Aamir and Khawar nipped wickets with regularity to bundle Hong Kong for 102 runs.
In reply, Oman started strongly with Jatinder Singh and Khawar raising 31 in five overs. There was a minor scare as Oman lost three wickets for 15 runs. However, in-form Aqib Ilyas and skipper Zeeshan Maqsood stitched a 60-run partnership to steer Oman home in 17.3 overs.
Oman now take on Ireland in a mouth-watering clash at the Tolerance Oval on Monday (2.10 pm). Entry is free for public.
