As a chartered plane carrying Brazilian football club Chapecoense crashed in the Colombian city of Medellin on Tuesday, thousands of miles away, sadness hung over those connected with UAE football as well. Former Al Jazira and Al Shabab coach Caio Junior was on that ill-fated flight which made its way from Brazil via Bolivia.
Reports said that Junior, who helped Abu Dhabi club Al Jazira clinch the prestigious President's Cup in 2012 before going on to guide Dubai club al Shabab to the GCC Club Cup, perished in the crash.
The team were travelling to Medellin for the Copa Sudamericana, where they were set to face Atletico Nacional on Wednesday. The ninth round of the Arabian Gulf League was played out on Tuesday with teams observing a minute silence for Caio Junior.
